Hello kids and cats,

Gateway, as always, was a blast. I was able to run three unWritten games, all of which turned out incredibly well. I had repeat players from last con, which was exciting. And for one game I had enough players show up that allowed for two simultaneous games. Both games went off well. They used the same Opening Cues and told two rather different stories. Amazing. People I didn’t even know would walk up to me (well two actually) and recognized unWritten and were interested in it. Also, I was able to bring Julian to his first Strategicon. He regrets not having come earlier. He had a blast and I let him take all of my prereg games: IAWA 2x, Grey Ranks, Inspectres, Shock, Og, Sons of Liberty, 3:16. He loved meeting everybody, some of you for the second time. He’ll definitely be back, I don’t know if I will… J/K. I was able to play unWritten, 3:16, Chjombie Chjinamas, Spirit of the Shattered Earth!

unWritten, well, you know, it’s great!

3:16 is a game that emulates Starship Troopers. Very Well. You have two skills, FA: Fighting Action, and NFA: Non-Fighting Action. The game has potential, especially once the higher level orders begin to kick in. These orders begin to turn the troopers on themselves as they start contradicting each other. In this game when you roll damage you’re not determining how many how much damage you do to an alien, but how many you kill. The premise is essentially: Earth is a paradise, in order to keep it that way we have decided to eliminate all other life. Yes, the extinction of anything that isn’t human. However, it’s, essentially, a one trick pony. I would be more interested in playing if this game was more about the soldiers that become these grotesque monsters, these caricatures of humanity. I only played it once, so I’ll say it has potential, but…

Chjombie Chjinamas (spelled Zombie Cinema) is a game made by a few Finns. Amazing game that emulates zombie movies to the T. It’s nye impossible to win. However, I did win, if you consider being the first person eaten by a zombie as winning. It’s a board game with a very strong RPG element. Fantastic! If you’ve ever seen a zombie movie, well, that’s exactly what you get! Fantastic. It’s housed in a VHS case!
Og, the game Julian played, well, I regret not playing it. In it you’re a cave man. You have access to 1d6+2 words, and that’s how you communicate in character. It’s essentially a cartoon that was made in the 70’s, I think, that was recently turned into an RPG. Really funny, done very well. I don’t know if I would be able to play this game all that often, but worth pulling out every few months! and drinking.

Grey Ranks, this is depressing, morose game about the Warsaw uprising. In it you play child soldiers. Amazing game, so I’ve heard, but quite gut punchy. It can be a hard game to play. So I got a copy.

Sons of Liberty, this is a game about the American war of independence. You play one of the founding fathers, George Washington, Adam Smith, Benjamin Franklin, etc. as they ride into battle on their mechanized and steam powered horses to fight the British as they swoop down in their ornithopters… YES! It’s the American revolution meets steampunk. I played this game about a year ago, in it I played General George Washington who eventually became General God King George Washington of Georgikistan, once known as Europe. Though, in the end, he eventually fell to the English. We can’t wait for the next one.

PS My brother bought a motorcycle!

Spione

Commitee for the Exploration of Mysteries

This is a great game in the spirit of “Baron Munchausen.” Though I can’t actually say it’s a great drinking game, because, well, we didn’t have drink, at least not any drinks with spirits.

The game consisted of a group of adventurers traveling from Madrid to Mexico(?) seeking the elusive Crystal Skull of … I don’t remember. The game ran very smoothly, and was easy to boot, and well it should, because you need to have a stout drink or delicate wine to play it right.

My favorite scene was having the pirate return from the dead riding a giant snake as it swallowed Dave’s character whole!

I have to add, that the game was run by Eric Boyd, the game’s designer. That was both a pleasure and exciting. He’s a great guy and he made a great game.

Sons of Liberty

Saturday morning I was given the great pleasure of being able to play President God-King George Washington of Georgistan. Yes, as our Pre-Prez lead the founding fathers around the east coast a bit, we rewrote history in a way that would capture any kids imagination. And, as you might guess, it ended with George’s ability to speak fluent European and renaming Germany Georgistan. Indeed, we don’t need to mention the minor affair that dethroned our buddy George on the coasts of England.

Roanoake

Saturday evening I spent with several people living the end of the first settlers. This story takes you through the last few days of those that tried to settle Roanoake and ended up disappearing. This game is based on Wushu, and this was my first experience with it. I enjoyed the game, I loved the setting and the situation. I don’t think I need to play Wushu again. It just isn’t my style. Though I can see how people enjoy it.

Don’t Rest Your Head

DRYH and Ryan Macklin, this is a good mix. I played with Turo and Nicholas. It has to be said here that Turo is very funny and that he has a really cool jacket. Ok, I played a Real Estate agent that was falling apart at the seems, while Turo played a “The Dude” character. It turned out that our characters were each other’s opposites. The game was a bit short, it was late, but excellent. In the end the Dude and the RE agent switched places, bodies and all. For the RE agent it was a welcome relief, he could finally be “normal.” But for the dude, well, it was his own little hell of perfection.

Sunday:

Inspectres

Inspectres is always, one of my top ten games of all times. You can never go wrong with it. This is a game of a franchise ghostbusting squad, and I played a femme fatale. In fact, that was my characters trait: femme fatale. We cleaned house, figuratively, at least, well, the ghost has been exorcized, and the house needs a bit of repair.

Spione

Spione is Ron Edwards “Spy vs. Guy” game. It’s based on the works of John le Carre and the like. Stuff I’m not familiar with. The game itself was great. I had a lot of fun, if you get a chance to play it at a con, don’t hesitate. I don’t think I’ll be playing other then in cons, but I’ll definitely look for it.

unWritten

Finally, unWritten. Probably the best game at the con… OK, I kid. I had 3 playtests and they were both great fun and incredibly insightful. I thank all of the people that came to the game, and all of the help that I got from Ryan, Josh, Meghann, Vasco, and Eric. The game, having been almost done for the 3rd time, is now entering into it’s newest final stage of completion.

This weekend we played 3 games of Torchwood. The first took place in Cardiff, where half of the team got “unstuck in time.” While the other half of the team struggled to find a way to bring them back. In the end we succeeded, except for the simple fact that as part of the team was getting stuck, the other part was getting unstuck… yeah, a lot of trouble. And a lot of fun.

The second game consisted of, SETI: Task Force UNIT (STFU). This was more of a Dr. Who meets the X-Files, and not so much Torchwood. In it the team fought the forces of Evil and the media. With a grand finale of my character sacrificing himself in order to destroy the evil aliens is he signs to Meg’s character “I Love You.”

The last game consisted of a team of Torchwood operatives in London that was faced with K.A.O.S. And cultists, who were both after the Codex… In the end, the characters suffered implants/homing beacons attached to the backs of their eyes, but the sacrifice was worth it. For we save the world again!

fun & games03 Sep 2007 11:00 am

I just got back from gateway. I had a great time, as always. I was able to playtest unWritten 3 times and learned several new games.

Aside from unWritten I played;

Star Wars Saga Edition! It was very disapointing. I thought it would have made some improvements over standard D20 3.5e… nope, it was the same exact game. Oh well.

Burning Wheel, the gift. As expected the scenario created by Luke Crane and presented by Colin J. was a great show. We had a lot of fun, there was fighting, banishment, and treachery! but the game itself just doesn’t sit well with me. though, I can see its value for people that enjoy games with a higher level of complexity.

It Was A Mutual Desicion. This game was facilitated by Jesse B. I had a lot of fun, but there was some miscommunication among the players and it turned out not to be what everyone anticipated. There were some minor issues with the game, but besides that I think its a great con game and I’ll play it again next year.

Shock:, facilitated by Judson L. which was the last game I played. The first time I played this was one of the worst game experiences I’ve had, and it wasn’t the company, because the other players are great! But after Sunday nights game with Judson I found out we played it sooo wrong the first time. Its a great game, too bad we didn’t play for 2 more hours so we could have wrapped it up. Judson did a bang up job showing us the ropes, we created a very intrigueing setting with many compelling characters. You should get it when version 1.3 comes out…

Thanks to all of the GMs and facilitators! You did a spectacular job! And thank you to all of the people who playtested unWritten! I was able to define many refinements that need to happen and there is one major rules change that I’ll definitly be working on.

Anyway, the con was great and I can’t wait until next year?

My faux pas moment was loosing my wallet and forgetting to get reinbursed for GMing at the con during “normal business” hours… oops, I got trapped there and had to beg Paul T. on bended knee for some cash so I could leave the parking structure. Sorry Paul. I’m an ass.

I discovered something very interesting about myself during this con. I don’t like the process of learning new games. I just want to know them. I want to walk in and you (the GM or Facilitator) to give me a magic pill… OK, that was stupid, but I do struggle with learning and I blame the game for me not knowing how to play. Realizing this about myself will definitely change how I approach con games!

Anyway, the con was great and I can’t wait until next year!

So my girlfriend who “hates” gaming, my son who loves D&D and hack and slash games, and I starting developing a setting for an unWritten game we are going to start playing on Wednesday. This is the games premise…

An Inuit village struggles between tradition and joining the corporate fisheries that are taking their livelihood.

Now, we don’t know anything about the Inuit, corporate fisheries, or any struggles that may exist between them, but this, to me at least, seems really awesome. I can’t wait to start playing.
