musings and playtest03 Feb 2009 12:10 pm

So I’ve recently played a game of unWritten with a couple of friends, Jesse and Laura. The game was great. We played a pseudo-historical that took place in France during the 1700’s. In it Jesse played Gaston; the Prince of France, Laura played Emily; the bodyguard of the Frances’ Princess, and I played Carlo, the son of France’s Regent.

The Opening Cues were:

A europe where romance is as much of a chess game played between lovers as politics between Kings and Queens.

The Princess of France has just reached a marriageable age, claiming her power from the Regent

The King of Spain and England vie for the Princesses hand as the Regent looks on jealously

More later…

So, I\’ve sent unWritten out for editing. I\’ve got one back, I\’ll get a second \”soon.\” Hopefully more. Then I\’ll adapt. Then send it out for another round of playtests and start commisioning art work. \n\nSoon, very soon, but never soon enough.

The edits are starting to come in. Once they\’re all in, I will start working on art.

I\’ve signed up to run 2 games of unWritten at OrCon.\n\nThe first one is called \’Being Christopher Kubasik\’ Where in we\’ll play a game where you can go into CK\’s head and… Well just go watch the movie, if you need more explanation. \n\nThe second game is \’Denoument\’ In it we\’ll play heroes that have just finished their epic quest, and must now learn to deal with the ramifications of their actions…\n\nI\’ll be running 2 more game, but I haven\’t figured out what they\’ll be yet!

So I\’m not going to write on unWritten anymore. I will synthesize any productive critiques, add missing examples, then send it off for editing. But, my own personal input is complete! I think… I hope… \n\nThe design is definately done. Of that I\’m sure. It produces what I created it to produce, fun and great stories.\n\nI\’ve sent it out to some friends to check for readability, organization, and whatnot.\n\nThen I\’ll incorporate final examples order artwork and publish the dam thing!

I’m in the process of rewriting unWritten in a way so that I can podcast its chapters. It won’t be a complete reading of the text, but more of a how-to.

I’d like to have different people guest host it in the different podcasts. The rewriting is also intended to make it accessible to high school teachers. I want this game to be used by HS teachers as a way of teaching kids how to tell, organize, and understand stories. Hopefully, it will be clear that this is foundational way of telling stories, not absolute. Once you understand what goes into a story you can then branch off into Bukowski, Dick, or Thompson land.

Wish me luck!

Well, I took that game that I transcribed a few months a go and wrote it up as a story. I’m pretty excited about it. After I have it edited, I’ll post it here and I’m going to podcast it. I’d love to know what you think when it’s posted.

Almost done with my editing, soon I’ll have to send off to someone to edit it for me… Does anybody have any suggestions?

Anyway, with the example text, my page count doubled, from 35 to 70. Wow.

I’m about halfway through the editing of the current draft. Hopefully soon.

I finally finished transcribing the goat herder game, like 4 weeks ago. But, now I need to go through and clean it up… I’ve been planning on doing that for some time now. I’m sure I’ll do it, eventually.
